Ethical Sourcing, Waste Management, and Sustainable Use Policy
Baku State University (BSU), one of Azerbaijan’s leading higher education institutions, is firmly committed to fostering environmental responsibility, ethical conduct, and sustainable development across all aspects of its academic and operational activities. As both an educator and a societal leader, BSU recognizes its responsibility to ensure that everyday practices—ranging from procurement and food sourcing to waste management and resource utilization—embody the principles of sustainability and social accountability.
In line with its strategic goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, BSU has implemented numerous initiatives to promote a greener and more responsible campus environment. Notable examples include the establishment of the EcoEnergy renewable energy station, developed in partnership with the Small and Medium Business Development Agency (KOBIA); the creation of the Eco Space research area dedicated to green technologies; and the introduction of a comprehensive food waste monitoring system in student canteens. In addition, the “Give a New Life to an Old Battery!” initiative and participation in the “Plastic-Free July” campaign highlight BSU’s proactive approach to responsible consumption and waste reduction.
As a proud member of the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN), BSU aligns its sustainability framework with international higher education standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Through its policies, partnerships, and community engagement, BSU continues to embed sustainability principles into its culture, governance, and daily operations.
The Ethical Sourcing, Waste Management, and Sustainable Use Policy consolidates these efforts into an institutional framework that guides ethical sourcing, responsible waste management, and sustainable resource use. It commits the University to transparent and environmentally responsible procurement, waste minimisation, and continuous improvement through measurable targets. This policy ensures that every procurement decision, supplier relationship, and operational process contributes to building a sustainable, ethical, and resource-efficient university community.
