Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Committee


Overview

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Committee at Baku State University (BSU) is dedicated to advancing sustainability initiatives and integrating the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals into the university’s academic, research, and operational activities. The committee serves as a platform for collaboration among faculty, students, and external partners to promote sustainability and drive impactful change.


Mission and Objectives

The SDG Committee aims to:

  • Foster awareness and engagement with the SDGs across the BSU community.

  • Incorporate sustainability principles into teaching, research, and campus operations.

  • Establish partnerships with national and international organizations to support SDG-related initiatives.

  • Monitor and report on the university’s progress in achieving the SDGs.

  • Organize events, workshops, and projects that promote sustainable practices and social responsibility.


Key Focus Areas

The SDG Committee prioritizes initiatives that align with the university’s strategic goals, including:

  • Quality Education (SDG 4): Enhancing educational programs to include sustainability themes.

  • Climate Action (SDG 13): Reducing the university’s environmental footprint through green campus initiatives.

  • Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17): Strengthening collaborations with local and global institutions.

  • Gender Equality (SDG 5): Promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities within the academic environment.

  • Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9): Supporting research and technological advancements that contribute to sustainable development.


Committee Structure

The SDG Committee consists of representatives from various university departments, including faculty members, administrative staff, and student organizations. The committee is led by a Chairperson and operates through specialized working groups focused on specific SDGs.

Sustainability Office


Sustainability Office (Baku State University) The Sustainability Office at Baku State University (BSU) is the university’s dedicated operational unit responsible for the practical implementation and coordination of sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-related activities across the institution. It is staffed by full-time employees who are responsible for ensuring continuous execution of sustainability initiatives, data management, and institutional reporting. The Office serves as the central coordination point between academic departments, administrative units, and external stakeholders to embed sustainability into all areas of university operations. The core responsibilities of the Sustainability Office include the day-to-day management of sustainability programmes, coordination of SDG-related projects, monitoring and analysis of institutional sustainability performance indicators (such as energy, water, waste, and emissions), and preparation of sustainability reports for internal governance and international reporting frameworks. In addition, the Office is responsible for implementing the university’s annual sustainability work plan, which includes climate action activities, resource efficiency initiatives, awareness-raising campaigns, capacity-building sessions, and stakeholder engagement events. It also supports the integration of sustainability principles into institutional processes, communication platforms, and partnership activities. Through its continuous operational work and full-time staffing structure, the Sustainability Office ensures the effective implementation and long-term institutionalisation of BSU’s sustainability agenda.
