Student Unions and Clubs

Baku State University (BSU) promotes a student-centered approach and a student-led academic culture by actively involving students in university management, teaching, and innovation processes. BSU continuously works to foster a motivational and creative learning ecosystem that equips students with 21st-century skills and enhances their competitiveness in both local and international labor markets.

Student Participation and Governance

Every student at BSU has the right to establish or join unions and clubs based on their interests, values, and beliefs, provided they comply with national legislation. These groups operate freely, promote their activities independently, and invite peers to participate.

The Student Youth Organization (SYO) and the Student Trade Union Committee are central representatives of student interests. Their chairpersons are elected democratically from among undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. The elected leaders represent all student unions within the Scientific (Academic) Council — BSU’s highest governing body — ensuring that student voices are heard in institutional decision-making.

Students also serve as members of Faculty Scientific Councils, contributing to governance at both university and faculty levels. The Student Youth Organization and the Student Trade Union Committee are affiliated with national student union networks, strengthening their advocacy and collaboration capacities.

Student Support and Oversight

BSU regularly collects student and alumni feedback through anonymous surveys, which are analyzed to guide improvement plans. During examination sessions, a Student Examination Oversight Committee — composed of student representatives — monitors assessment processes, investigates complaints, and ensures transparency and fairness.

Social, Cultural, and Development Activities

Student unions and clubs organize numerous cultural, volunteer, and sports activities, enhancing campus life and promoting community engagement. Among these, the Student SDG Club plays a leading role in promoting awareness and action toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Summary

BSU officially recognizes an independent student union structure that:

  • Provides formal input into university governance,

  • Offers student support, advocacy, and mentorship, and

  • Organizes social, cultural, and sustainability-focused activities.

This model fully aligns with the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Education, the Law on Public Associations, and the Law on Youth Policy, reflecting BSU’s commitment to democratic governance, youth empowerment, and inclusive university development.
