BSU plays an active and strategic role in reviewing global approaches to the SDGs and in shaping international best practice through its extensive research collaborations, participation in global networks, and engagement in cross-border sustainability initiatives. The university systematically benchmarks its activities against international standards and incorporates global evidence-based approaches into institutional planning, research programs, and community outreach.

1. Strengthening SDG Governance and Policy through Global University Networks

BSU is a long-standing member of several influential international organizations—including the European University Association (EUA), Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN), Eurasia Universities Association, and the Caspian Universities Association—all of which facilitate structured exchanges on sustainability governance and higher education’s role in achieving the SDGs.
Through these networks, BSU academics and administrators participate in annual conferences, working groups, and policy forums where they review comparative SDG strategies implemented by universities across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. These engagements allow BSU to analyse best practices in university sustainability governance, climate action strategies, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of SDGs into academic programs.

2. Adopting and Contributing to Global Sustainability Standards (AASHE)

In 2024, BSU officially joined the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Membership provides direct access to a global repository of sustainability case studies, STARS sustainability reporting frameworks, and training programs used by leading universities such as UC Berkeley, MIT, and the University of Toronto.
BSU uses these resources to evaluate its own sustainability performance, improve transparency in reporting, and adapt international approaches on energy efficiency, sustainable procurement, waste management, and green campus operations. By joining AASHE, BSU became one of the first universities in Azerbaijan to align campus sustainability with internationally recognised benchmarks, contributing to the development of regional best practice.

3. Comparative Research on Climate Action and Ecosystem Restoration (SDG 13 & 15)

The university’s participation in the ECOLEAD project, jointly implemented with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Prosecutor General’s Office, has positioned BSU at the forefront of comparative environmental policy research in Azerbaijan. As part of this initiative, BSU researchers study global models of post-environmental crime restoration, biodiversity rehabilitation, and community-led conservation initiatives. The project team examines best practices from countries such as Norway, Canada, and Japan to inform national strategies for restoring damaged green spaces. This comparative research directly contributes to policy development in Azerbaijan and strengthens national resilience to climate-related threats.

4. “Eco Space” Sustainability Hub as a Platform for International Best Practice Transfer

BSU’s recently launched “Eco Space” (Eko Məkan) hub serves as a living laboratory for adapting global models of sustainability education. It integrates pedagogical models inspired by leading universities such as Delft University of Technology, the University of Vienna, and NTU Singapore. The hub promotes project-based learning, student-driven innovation, and interdisciplinary research aligned with SDGs 4, 7, 11, 12, and 13. Through international partnerships, Eco Space offers workshops, hackathons, and seminars where global sustainability experts mentor BSU students on climate resilience, renewable energy solutions, and circular economy models. These initiatives help BSU not only adopt but also co-create international best practices tailored to local needs.

5. EU-Funded and Regional Research Projects Supporting Comparative SDG Approaches

BSU is actively engaged in several European Union Erasmus+ Capacity-Building Projects, many of which directly address SDG-aligned themes such as innovation in higher education, inclusivity, digital transformation, and green transition in universities. Within these projects, BSU researchers exchange methodologies, curricula, and policy approaches with European partners, enabling the university to adopt evidence-based solutions from leading institutions in Germany, Italy, Poland, and the Baltic states. Through the STAR-NET Regional Network, BSU collaborates with nuclear technology education institutions to develop safer, more efficient, and cleaner energy systems—supporting SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy. These collaborative platforms create opportunities for BSU to contribute to international research outputs, comparative studies, and joint policy recommendations.

6. Engaging in Global SDG Research, Data Collection, and Benchmarking

BSU participates in international exercises assessing progress toward SDGs, including research collaborations facilitated by Times Higher Education, Gulf University for Science and Technology, and regional partners. During BSU’s strategic session at the World Academic Summit, the university exchanged experiences with global partners on measuring SDG performance, improving research impact, and driving institutional change for sustainability. BSU researchers actively contribute to benchmarking studies, policy reports, and comparative analyses focusing on SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

7. Advancing Open Science and SDG Research with EIFL

Through its membership in the EIFL network, BSU collaborates with international institutions to improve research accessibility, strengthen open data practices, and promote the global exchange of knowledge related to the SDGs. BSU’s involvement supports comparative research on global education trends, digital transformation in developing regions, and innovative approaches to open knowledge systems. These initiatives empower BSU scholars to integrate international best practices in research transparency, inclusion, and knowledge-sharing into their academic work.
