Baku State University Support Programs for Underrepresented Groups
Baku State University (BSU) is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of its community. Dedicated mentoring, counseling, and peer support programs are offered to enhance the educational and professional experiences of students, staff, and faculty from underrepresented groups. Key initiatives include:
1. Mentoring / Tutoring Programs
-
Student Mentorship Initiative: Students are paired with senior students or faculty mentors for one-on-one or small group sessions focused on academic guidance, study strategies, life skills, and career planning. For example, a first-year student struggling in a large lecture may meet weekly with a mentor to develop a personalized study plan and connect with campus resources. This program is open to all students but especially benefits those from underrepresented backgrounds, such as first-generation students.
-
Faculty and Staff Mentoring: Faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds are paired with experienced mentors to support research, teaching, and career development. Activities include mentorship meetings, professional development workshops, and collaborative research projects.
2. Counseling & Wellbeing Support
-
Diversity and Inclusion Counseling: The University Counseling Center provides individual counseling, support groups, and workshops tailored to students’ diverse needs, including multilingual services. For example, international students may access counseling in their native language and join peer support groups to build community and resilience.
3. Peer Support Networks
-
Peer Mentorship Networks: Students with shared interests or backgrounds are connected for study groups, social meetups, and skill-sharing workshops. For instance, a student from a rural region can join a regional peer group and meet a senior mentor monthly to gain academic and social support.
-
Student Organizations and Clubs: Cultural and interest-based clubs provide platforms for students from diverse backgrounds to connect, celebrate culture, and develop leadership skills.
4. Special Initiatives Targeting Underrepresented Groups
-
Women in STEM Program: Supports female students and junior faculty in STEM through mentorship, workshops on leadership and career development, and networking opportunities.
-
International Student Support: Offers orientation programs, language support, and cultural exchange events to facilitate integration and academic success.
Impact:
These programs help level the playing field for students, staff, and faculty from underrepresented groups, supporting academic success, professional development, emotional wellbeing, and social inclusion. By providing mentoring, counseling, peer networks, and targeted initiatives, BSU demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, aligned with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
