A scientific seminar was held at the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science of Baku State University (BSU) on the topic "Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of the Dynamic State of Forest-Vegetation Cover in the Həkəriçay Basin (the territories of Lachin, Gubadli, and Zangilan districts) during the Occupation Period," presented by Gunel Heydarzadeh, a doctoral student of the Department of Geographic Ecology.
The seminar evaluated the dynamics of the ecological situation in different regions of the Hakarichay basin, determined its interaction with the regional hydrological regime, and presented the obtained results.
Based on satellite data, the forest-vegetation cover (NDVI index) of the research area for different years was determined, and its dynamics was assessed, with area indicators calculated. In addition, images reflecting increasing, decreasing, and unchanged areas according to cover types were presented, along with maps showing changes in forest-vegetation cover species over different years. A histogram was created based on area indicators from dynamic maps obtained by comparing the images of various years in the study area. Diagrams reflecting the river network and hydrological situation dynamics of the Lachin, Gubadli, and Zangilan districts were also prepared. Images reflecting the MNDWI water index of the research area were obtained, and dynamic maps were created based on them.
The research also assessed the aerosol levels in the Lachin, Gubadli, and Zangilan districts, determined the NDVI index, and investigated the impact of changes in the hydrological situation on the forest-vegetation cover.
As part of the study of the vegetation cover in the southwestern region of Azerbaijan, a multi-layer electronic map was created based on the processing of satellite images of the Earth's surface, including relief layers and derivatives, as well as multispectral indices such as NDVI, AFRI, and NDWI.
