A scientific seminar dedicated to April 22 – International Earth Day was held at Baku State University (BSU), organized jointly by the Faculties of Geology and Geography.
The purpose of the event was to highlight the significance of this day, raise awareness about global environmental challenges, and address current issues in geological and geographical sciences.
The Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Professor Magsad Qocamanov, spoke about the importance of celebrating International Earth Day and emphasized the need for ecological stability and the efficient use of natural resources. He noted that the tradition of celebrating Earth Day began in 1970 in the United States. The International Earth Day was established through the initiative of more than 50 UN member states during the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly in 2009 and has been observed on April 22 since 2010. He also mentioned that such scientific events play a crucial role in shaping students' ecological mindset and the development of young professionals.
Associate Professor Avaz Mammadov, Head of the Seismology and Earth Physics Department at the Faculty of Geology, delivered a scientific presentation on the "Problems of Earthquake Prediction." He provided detailed information about the existing scientific methods for earthquake prediction, their possibilities and limitations, international practices, and the current state of scientific research in Azerbaijan. He also discussed the prospects for the development of seismology and the challenges ahead in this field.
Professor Chingiz İsmayılov, Head of the Department of Economic and Social Geography at the Faculty of Geography, informed the participants about the key concepts of geomatics, methods of spatial data collection and analysis, as well as the role of these technologies in environmental monitoring, disaster prediction, and sustainable regional development.
