A scientific seminar on "Trophic and Biotopic Relationships of Birds on the Southwestern Coast of the Caspian Sea" was held at Baku State University (BSU), led by the Head of the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the Faculty of Biology, Professor Abulfaz Taghiyev.
The speaker noted that the research, covering the years 2015-2024, was conducted in the Absheron, Shirvan, and Gizilaghac National Parks, as well as the delta of the Kura River. Based on the research findings, the decrease in the Caspian Sea's water level has had a significant impact on the birds' food sources, population structure, and settlement areas. Notably, certain species (such as Microcarbo pygmaeus, Nycticorax nycticorax, etc.) have shown significant changes in their breeding behavior, starting to nest in new areas, such as meadow-protective forest strips, in colonies. The importance of these changes for biodiversity management and conservation was emphasized.
In the studies, the trophic and biotopic relationships of 126 bird species from 13 families during their breeding and wintering periods were mapped and analyzed using GIS technology. It was also reported that 22 rare bird species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan were observed.
