Teachers and students of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science at Baku State University (BSU) went on an excursion to the facilities of “Tamiz Shahar” JSC on April 22, on the occasion of International Earth Day.
They first observed the process of sorting municipal solid waste at the Balakhani Waste Sorting Plant and its transfer to recycling enterprises, and then familiarized themselves with the operations of the Baku Waste-to-Energy Plant. It was noted that the plant, which has been operating since 2013, has the capacity to neutralize 500,000 tons of waste annually and functions in compliance with Europe’s strictest environmental standards and requirements, based on 4G technology. Through thermal treatment of waste at the plant, up to 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity are generated annually, which meets the energy needs of approximately 100,000 households.
The faculty team also visited the Balakhani Industrial Park to observe the recycling process. It was reported that the Industrial Park has been operating since 2017. Currently, 25 resident companies are registered and engaged in recycling across 27 different directions.
Finally, participants exchanged views on questions of interest and emphasized the importance of expanding activities in the area of primary waste sorting.
