Baku State University (BSU) participated in the event titled “Sustainability Exhibition: Art and Innovation for the Planet”, organized within the framework of Baku Climate Action Week, with two innovative projects — “Irrigo: Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystem” and “Hydroponics.”

The “Irrigo: Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystem” project, authored by Reyhan Mirsultanova, engineer at the BSU Student Scientific-Technical Creativity Center, represents a next-generation agricultural model based on smart technological solutions. The project aims to minimize the use of freshwater for irrigation, treat wastewater contaminated with organic pollutants, salts, and heavy metals, and repurpose it as irrigation water within a self-cleaning and cyclic ecological system. This approach supports water conservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental protection.

The “Hydroponics” project, developed by Gumru Huseynova, Head of the Cell Culture and Genome Editing Research Laboratory at the BSU Research, Development and Innovation Excellence Center, and Elvira Tahmazli, Research Associate, focuses on promoting the transition of small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises (SMEs) to soilless cultivation systems. The startup advocates for the efficient use of resources in agriculture, the adoption of sustainable production methods, and the dissemination of innovative technologies. It aims to contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and the advancement of a green economy.

BSU’s “Irrigo: Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystem” was selected as one of the top six projects at the exhibition. The project team was awarded a certificate of recognition for their active participation, creativity, and contributions to promoting sustainable development and transformative innovation.
