An excursion to the Baku Zoological Park was organized for students by the members of the "BSU Volunteers" organization, under the initiative of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science at Baku State University.
During the excursion, students were informed about the protection of species listed in the "Red Book" of Azerbaijan, the endangered species, and the reintroduction program. They also had the opportunity to become acquainted with unique fauna examples from other countries.
It is worth mentioning that the Baku Zoological Park has been in operation since 1928. In 2017, under the initiative of the "International Dialogue for Environmental Protection" Public Union (IDEA), major reconstruction works began at the zoo, and the park was officially reopened in 2021. After the reconstruction, the area of the zoo was expanded from 2.25 hectares to 4.25 hectares. Currently, 125 animal species are kept at the park, 22 of which are included in the "Red Book." The park's aquaterrarium houses 62 species of animals. The zoo ensures the preservation of the live gene pool of many rare and endangered species, which are bred and then released back into nature.
