BSU team has secured a spot in the final of the international competition with their "Supercapback" project
12-11-2024

The Baku State University (BSU) team "BSU Creativity Workz" has secured a spot in the final of the "E-Mobility Innovation and Startup Competition" as part of the "EV Charge Show" – the Global Meeting Platform for Electric Vehicle Charging Station Manufacturers, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 13-15, 2024.

The conference, which has been held in Turkey since 2022, brings together electric vehicle companies and next-generation charging station manufacturers from around the world. The goal of this conference is to develop battery and charging technologies used in electric vehicles, support innovative digital solutions, and promote projects based on clean energy use. The 2024 conference is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors and more than 300 companies from over 40 countries worldwide.

As part of the conference, the "E-Mobility Innovation and Startup Competition" is organized each year, where various teams present their projects related to battery and charging technologies for electric vehicles. This year, 220 teams submitted their projects, and 8 teams made it to the final. Among the finalists, the "BSU Creativity Workz" team from BSU is represented with their project "SuperCapBack."

The project, developed at BSU's Student Scientific and Technical Creativity Center, aims to enhance the efficiency of batteries by replacing traditional Li-ion batteries with a dual-layer EDLC supercapacitor + Li-ion hybrid combination in electric vehicles. This approach addresses the decreased efficiency and shorter lifespan of traditional Li-ion batteries caused by the fluctuating current generated by the regenerative braking system and the high amperage constant current drawn from the battery during acceleration in electric vehicles. In the "SuperCapBack" project, EDLC supercapacitors, an AC-DC converter, and a cooling system are added to the input and output of the currents in order to minimize the harmful effects of these currents. This maintains the efficiency and extends the lifespan of the Li-ion battery.
