On September 2, the second day of the UN Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change – “LCOY Azerbaijan 2025” was held, organized by the “EkoSfera” Ecological-Social Center, in partnership with Baku State University (BSU) and “SEA BREEZE Resort,” with media support from the Caspian International Broadcasting Company (CBC).
During the second day of “LCOY Azerbaijan 2025,” the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues and COP29 President, Mukhtar Babayev, emphasized that hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan is a significant historic milestone in global climate diplomacy. He stressed the necessity of youth’s active engagement in this process, noting that Azerbaijani youth initiatives on the climate agenda would resonate not only at the national level but also on the international stage, contributing to shaping global policy. He also highlighted the role of BSU in structuring climate change and sustainable development activities and ensuring active youth participation in this field.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Indira Hajiyeva, Member of Parliament and Executive Vice-Rector of ADA University Fariz Ismayilzade, Chairman of the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration Rufat Mahmud, representative of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan Tural Abbasov, and Head of the “EkoSfera” Ecological-Social Center and COP29 Organizing Committee member Firuza Sultan-zade emphasized in their speeches the crucial role of youth in addressing climate issues and building a sustainable future.
Later, panel discussions were held on “Climate and a Sustainable Future: Youth’s Perspective” and “Climate Change and Sustainable Infrastructure.” The sessions covered topics such as circular economy and eco-innovation, biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, creating value from waste, social justice, green jobs, water security, and the role of NGOs.
At the end of the event, the initial draft of the National Youth Statement (NYS) of Azerbaijan on Climate was discussed and adopted.
The document will contribute to the Global Youth Statement to be presented at COP30 in Brazil.
It should be noted that the official opening ceremony and the first sessions of “LCOY Azerbaijan 2025” were held on September 1 at Baku State University. This conference will be remembered as an important platform enabling youth to play a more active role in national and international climate processes.
