Presentation of an interactive map on the environmental impacts of Armenia’s Mining Industry held at BSU
23-05-2025

At Baku State University (BSU), a presentation was held for an interactive map developed by the "Environmental Protection First" coalition, which illustrates the negative environmental impacts of mining enterprises operating within the territory of Armenia.

Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the coalition and chair of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, along with coalition member Muqabil Bayramov, informed the attendees about the coalition’s activities. Amin Mammadov stated that the primary goal of the meeting was to inform BSU’s faculty and students about the environmental impact of Armenia’s mining industry in the Caucasus region and to encourage collaborative efforts toward assessing the environmental damage caused.

It was noted that based on satellite images, a comprehensive report and interactive map were prepared covering over 20 sites within Armenia, including areas near the Azerbaijani border, where industrial enterprises extract various non-ferrous and ferrous metals. The development of the interactive map involved extensive use of maps from different years, archival documents, and other reports.

Following this, a live demonstration of the interactive website where the map is hosted was conducted, and information about its features and functionalities was provided.

The event continued with discussions, and participants’ questions were answered.
