Scientific seminar at BSU: Carbon credit market and potential opportunities
03-07-2025

A scientific seminar on the topic “Carbon Credit Market and Potential Opportunities” was held by the Nano-Research Scientific Laboratory of the Center for Excellence in Research, Development and Innovation at Baku State University (BSU). Presentations were delivered by Kim Jiseok, a scientific researcher at the laboratory, and Orkhan Gulahmadov, a junior scientific researcher.

Orkhan Gulahmadov provided detailed information about two of the most critical global challenges of our time — climate change and the energy crisis. He emphasized the negative impacts of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂), on ecosystems, human health, and economic systems. It was noted that important international initiatives are being implemented to address this problem, including various technological and economic mechanisms aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Kim Jiseok discussed the essence of the carbon credit market, how this mechanism functions, and the economic value of credits granted to companies and countries in exchange for reducing carbon emissions. His presentation included the basic principles of the carbon credit system, specific examples from leading countries such as the European Union, Japan, Canada, and South Korea, as well as international standards and technical criteria used to measure and assess carbon reduction.

The speakers also highlighted the new opportunities created for Azerbaijan following the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was held in Baku in 2024. They noted that after COP29, regulating carbon emissions and implementing a carbon taxation system have become key topics on the national agenda. In this context, the importance of strengthening the knowledge and experience capacity of scientific research institutions and universities, enhancing cooperation with industry, and organizing awareness-raising initiatives was emphasized.

The research conducted at BSU’s Nano-Research Laboratory can contribute not only to reducing carbon emissions but also to the development and formation of a national carbon credit market. The presenters stressed the need for coordinated collaboration in the future between government institutions, the private sector, and academia to achieve these goals.

At the end of the seminar, participants' questions related to the topic were answered.
