Scientific seminar at BSU: Demographic indicators and ecological problems of cities located in the lower reaches of the Kur River
19-12-2023

The next scientific seminar was held at the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science of Baku State University (BSU). At the seminar, a lecture by Elnur Nagiyev, a doctoral student of the Department of Geographical Ecology, on "Demographic indicators and ecological problems of the cities located in the lower reaches of the Kur River" was heard.

It was noted that the dynamics of the demographic situation of 7 cities (Mingachevir, Yevlakh, Zardab, Sabirabad, Salyan, Shirvan, Neftchala) located in the lower reaches of Kur and where the population is the most populated was investigated. Population census data and statistical demographic indicators covering the years 1989-2021 were taken as a database for the analysis. It was determined that there was an increase in the area, population and density of the administrative territorial units of the cities located downstream of Kur compared to previous years. The most natural growth was observed in the cities of Sabirabad (165.12%) and Zardab (153.84%). The reason for this is that the population in those cities is mainly engaged in various fields of agriculture (grain growing, horticulture, viticulture, cotton growing). Thus, it was observed that natural growth is relatively low in cities whose population is mostly engaged in industries (oil and gas extraction, electric power, chemistry, production of construction materials, etc.) (Mingachevir (129.52%)).

As a result, implementation of continuous measures in employment, social protection, medicine and other fields to regulate demographic development problems in cities located downstream of the Kur, opening of new industrial parks in the cities of Mingachevir, Shirvan, expansion of urban areas according to the new urban development infrastructure, Yevlakh, Zardab, Sabirabad, Salyan , it is considered necessary to create new industrial districts, develop recreation, agro-industry, peri-urban farms, processing industry in the cities of Neftchala.

Then the questions of the seminar participants were answered.
