A scientific seminar titled “The Biogeography and Biodiversity of Azerbaijan's Flora in the Context of Climate Change” was held at the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science at Baku State University, featuring a presentation by Elman Yusifov, head of the Laboratory of Higher Plant Ecology and Geography at the Institute of Botany under the Ministry of Science and Education.
Elman Yusifov provided information on the historical-geological trends of climate change, explaining the characteristics of flora diversity development worldwide, including in the Caucasus geobotanical region. He presented findings on the distribution of Azerbaijan's vegetation in accordance with relief features, highlighting the increase in plant species endemism based on landscape diversity with elevation. He noted that as one ascends in altitude, the species diversity of endemic plants increases. He also pointed out that ecosystems within the country are subjected to anthropogenic impacts, resulting in many species being threatened.
Elman Yusifov informed seminar participants about current efforts to protect biodiversity in the country, modern innovations in botany, the role of vegetation in climate formation, and the negative impacts of global climate change on the richness of Azerbaijan's flora.
At the end of the seminar, students had their questions related to the topic answered.
