A practical training session titled “Use of GPS in Geological Exploration” was held at Baku State University (BSU), organized jointly by the Student Youth Organization of the Faculty of Geology and the “BSU Volunteers” organization.

The training was conducted by Elfaq Mammadov, a leading specialist in the Geological and Geophysical Data Analysis Division of the Geological Exploration Department at “AzerGold” CJSC and part-time instructor at the Department of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior at BSU's Faculty of Geology. The purpose of the training was to familiarize students with modern geological research methods, the effective use of GPS technology in field geological exploration, and to help transform theoretical knowledge into practical skills.

At the beginning of the session, detailed information was provided about the technical specifications and practical features of the “Garmin GPSMAP” device used during the training. It was noted that these devices offer two-way text messaging capabilities. Through the Iridium satellite network, users can communicate via SMS and email from any location in the world. Additionally, the device can send a direct SOS signal to the international search and rescue service GEOS, which is of significant importance for safety.

The GPS tracking feature allows users to monitor coordinates in real time and record routes on a map. Moreover, the devices can be synchronized with smartphones via Bluetooth using “Garmin Earthmate” or “Explore” apps, making map usage and message writing more accessible.

During the training, participants gained extensive knowledge about the structure and operating principles of GPS devices and their role in geological mapping processes. In the practical part, students actively participated in determining coordinates, collecting data, and transferring this information onto maps under simulated field conditions.
