Within the framework of COP29, an event titled "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Universities: International Cooperation Experience" was held in the Green Zone, organized by Baku State University (BSU) and the "EcoSphere" Social-Ecological Center.
The moderator of the event, Shabnam Safarova, the advisor to the BSU rector on digitalization and information technologies, stated that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), defined by the UN in 2015, are a universal call to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and quality education. She emphasized that universities play a crucial role in the advancement of these goals through education, research, and collaboration.
In their speeches, Asiman Ilyasov, the BSU rector's advisor on quality assurance, Fariz Quliyev, the head consultant of the International Projects Management Sector of the International Cooperation Department of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, Lətifə Nəsibova, Acting Executive Director of the French-Azerbaijani University, and Qənirə Məmmədzadə, head of the Strategic Planning Department at the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, highlighted that higher education institutions serve as innovation and knowledge centers, acting as catalysts for the SDGs. They emphasized that courses on sustainable development, climate action, and global health equip students with the knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems. They also pointed out that cross-border collaboration is essential to achieving the SDGs. Universities engage in international cooperation, share experiences, conduct joint research, and develop large-scale solutions. Exchange programs allow students and faculty to gain diverse perspectives on sustainable development. Collaborative research initiatives address issues like renewable energy or public health. All these partnership networks contribute to the advancement of the SDGs. Through international collaboration, universities promote innovation and prepare future leaders to build a sustainable and just world.
In his speech, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev discussed the impact of the SDGs on the overall activities of universities. He congratulated representatives of various universities on their achievements in international rankings and noted that these successes are a result of the activities of higher education institutions in recent years that have been aligned with the goals of sustainable development.
