Baku State University (BSU) has emerged as the leader in the South Caucasus according to the “UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2025”, which evaluates the ecological sustainability performance of leading universities worldwide.
This year, BSU made significant progress, ranking 493rd out of 1,745 universities in 105 countries, marking an improvement of 114 positions compared to the previous year. Among 19 Azerbaijani higher education institutions included in the ranking, BSU secured the highest position in the country.
The UI GreenMetric ranking aims to encourage universities to actively engage in addressing environmental challenges and to promote sustainable development principles on campuses. Assessment is conducted based on the following key criteria:
- Impact of campuses on the natural environment and infrastructure solutions
- Energy policies and reduction of climate change impact
- Optimization of paper usage and digitalization
- Efficient management of water resources
- Environmentally sustainable transportation
- Integration of ecological topics into teaching
- Resources allocated to ecological research
- Number of scientific publications on sustainability
BDU’s achievement reflects the university’s ecological initiatives, as well as the efforts of its students and academic staff in environmental responsibility. This accomplishment strengthens BDU’s position in international rankings and demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development.
Moving forward, BSU aims to further expand the application of modern ecological practices, continue protecting the environment, and successfully fulfill its academic and social mission in the field of sustainable development.
