18-06-2026

Baku State University (BSU) has been ranked 565th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. Advancing by 123 positions compared to the previous year, BSU achieved the highest ranking among universities in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus.

In this edition of the QS rankings, 8,808 universities from 106 countries were evaluated, with 1,504 institutions included in the final ranking list. Universities were assessed based on indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, international collaboration, and other performance metrics.

BSU’s progress reflects significant advances in recent years in strengthening scientific research, improving institutional governance, expanding international partnerships, and aligning academic programs with labor market demands. The university also improved its standing in the QS Europe Rankings 2026, rising 58 places to reach 278th position in Europe.

According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, BSU was included for the first time in two broad subject categories, while the number of ranked narrow subject areas increased to eight. In broad disciplines, the university was ranked in the 401–500 range for Natural Sciences and 501–550 for Engineering and Technology.

In specific subject areas, BSU was ranked as follows:

  • Petroleum Engineering: 51–100
  • Modern Languages: 151–200
  • Mathematics: 251–300
  • Law: 301–350
  • Chemical Engineering: 401–450
  • Physics: 401–450
  • Chemistry: 451–500
  • Computer Science: 601–650

These results make BSU the Azerbaijani university represented in the highest number of subject areas within the QS rankings.

The university administration congratulated the academic and administrative staff, students, partner institutions, and the communities of other Azerbaijani higher education institutions included in the QS rankings for these achievements.

It is noteworthy that the Socio-Economic Development Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2022–2026 set a target of having at least three Azerbaijani universities among the world’s top 800 institutions. BSU has already achieved this objective.
