Beginning with the 2026/2027 academic year, Baku State University (BSU) will introduce a new Master's specialization in Oil and Gas Field Geophysics at the Faculty of Geology.
The specialization is designed to prepare highly qualified professionals with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in the geophysical methods used for the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas fields. The program emphasizes the application of modern technologies and data-driven approaches in petroleum geophysics.
Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of geological well logging, lithological and petrophysical characterization of rocks, identification of reservoir formations, and evaluation of porosity, permeability, and hydrocarbon saturation. They will also develop skills in processing and interpreting geophysical data to refine geological models, identify productive reservoirs, investigate structural features, and improve hydrocarbon reserve estimation.
The curriculum covers regional geophysical surveys for hydrocarbon exploration, geological modeling, identification of prospective accumulation zones, and geophysical monitoring during field development. Students will study reservoir pressure dynamics, fluid movement, oil-water and gas-oil contacts, well productivity assessment, and geophysical techniques for production monitoring.
A key component of the specialization is the study of well logging methods. Students will receive training in the theory, application, and interpretation of electrical, electromagnetic, radioactive, acoustic, and other logging techniques. They will also gain experience in evaluating the technical condition of production wells, analyzing geofluid pressures, computer-based interpretation of geophysical data, geological and geophysical modeling, and the use of advanced digital technologies widely employed in the international oil and gas industry.
Graduates will be equipped with the scientific knowledge and practical competencies required to pursue careers in hydrocarbon exploration, reserve evaluation, field development, production monitoring, and the processing and interpretation of geophysical data using modern industry-standard software.
