BSU researchers investigate the biochemical and molecular genetic characteristics of persimmon genotypes
07-07-2026

A scientific seminar entitled "Comparative phylogenetic analysis and genetic diversity of species of the genus Diospyros L." was held at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU). The seminar was delivered by Natavan Bakhshaliyeva, a doctoral candidate in the Doctor of Science program and a lecturer at the Department of Genetics.

The presentation highlighted the results of a study on persimmon samples collected from the Balakan, Zagatala, Gakh, Sheki, and Gabala districts of the Sheki–Zagatala Economic Region. The research examined the chemical and biochemical composition, mineral element content, and genetic diversity of the samples using ISSR and SCoT molecular markers.

The study included a comparative analysis of water content, dry matter, sugars, ascorbic acid, carotene, cellulose, ash, fat, nitrogen, and other biochemical parameters. Molecular genetic analyses identified the levels of genetic similarity and diversity among the investigated genotypes. Genetic relationships were further evaluated using UPGMA cluster analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA).

During the seminar, the significance of the findings for the characterization of the persimmon gene pool, identification of promising genotypes, development of scientifically based breeding programs, and conservation of biodiversity was emphasized.
