Baku State University (BSU) will introduce a new master's specialization in Climate Change Adaptation at its Faculty of Geography beginning in the 2026/2027 academic year.
The interdisciplinary program is designed to address the growing need for specialists capable of assessing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of climate change, developing adaptation strategies, and strengthening resilience to climate-related risks. Rising challenges such as water scarcity, droughts, heatwaves, and extreme weather events have increased demand for professionals with expertise in climate adaptation and sustainable development.
The curriculum will equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in climate risk assessment, water resource management, climate-resilient agriculture, ecosystem conservation, sustainable urban planning, disaster risk management, geographic information systems (GIS), climate policy, and sustainable development. Students will also study advanced climate models, remote sensing technologies, international climate policy frameworks, and adaptation methodologies based on national and global best practices.
Supported by the Faculty of Geography's scientific and academic capacity, the program aims to prepare highly qualified professionals capable of contributing to climate resilience, environmental protection, and evidence-based policymaking.
Graduates will be eligible for careers in the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, other government agencies, environmental and engineering companies, the energy and agricultural sectors, as well as research institutes and higher education institutions.
The new specialization is expected to strengthen Azerbaijan's capacity to respond to climate change, enhance environmental sustainability, and support the implementation of national and global sustainable development priorities.
