According to information provided by the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics at Baku State University (BSU), this is the time when the Earth’s axis of rotation forms its maximum angle relative to the direction of the Sun. On this day, the Sun reaches its minimum altitude above the horizon at noon (26.2°).

As a result, December 21 will mark the shortest day of the year, with daylight lasting 9 hours, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds, and the longest night, lasting 14 hours, 42 minutes, and 38 seconds.

The duration of the winter season will be 88 days, 23 hours, 42 minutes, and 52 seconds.
