20-10-2025

A meeting was held with Bakhtiyar Sirajov, a graduate of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics of Baku State University (BSU) and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The event was attended by BSU’s Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation, Huseyn Mammadov, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics, Alakbar Aliyev, as well as faculty members and students.

Dean Alakbar Aliyev noted that graduates of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics successfully work in various countries around the world, including Azerbaijan, holding high-ranking positions. One such graduate is Bakhtiyar Sirajov, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Alakbar Aliyev informed students about Sirajov’s professional journey. He highlighted that Sirajov was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 by the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and had served for many years as a senior staff member at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He also emphasized the importance of such meetings for students’ development.

Bakhtiyar Sirajov stated that he studied at BSU’s Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics during the years 1974–1979. He expressed his satisfaction with meeting students at his alma mater. The guest provided detailed information about his path from student life to his work at the IAEA, stressing the importance of young people’s contributions to scientific progress. He gratefully recalled the Azerbaijani scholars from whom he gained knowledge and experience, noting with pride that their students are now working in prestigious universities and research centers around the world.

It was noted that in 2005, the IAEA and its Director General, Mohamed ElBaradei, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for their efforts to prevent the military use of nuclear energy and to ensure the safe application of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Since that year, Bakhtiyar Sirajov has been among the IAEA staff members who were collectively recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize.
