BSU hosts scientific seminar on the role of libraries in preserving cultural heritage
10-03-2026

At Baku State University, a scientific seminar titled “The role of libraries in the preservation of cultural heritage” was held at the Faculty of Information and Document Management as part of a series of events dedicated to Science Day in Azerbaijan.

The seminar featured a presentation by Adiba Ismayilova, Deputy Director of the National Library of Azerbaijan, who shared insights based on the institution’s professional experience.

The presentation highlighted the evolving role of libraries in the modern information society, emphasizing that libraries are not only providers of information but also key scientific and cultural institutions responsible for preserving, systematizing, and transmitting national cultural heritage to future generations. It was noted that rare manuscripts, printed publications, historical documents, and other information resources preserved in library collections constitute an essential part of cultural heritage, and their protection and integration into scientific circulation are among the primary functions of libraries.

Detailed information was provided on the rich collections of the National Library, including rare manuscript copies, early printed books produced through lithographic techniques, and periodicals published from the 19th century to the present day. The “Rare Books and Library Museum” department was highlighted for preserving some of the oldest books in nearly 20 languages, along with fundamental scientific works and valuable reference materials.

The report also addressed ongoing digitization initiatives at the National Library, the development of electronic information resources, the creation of national bibliographic databases, and efforts in international information exchange. It was emphasized that the application of modern technologies enhances both the preservation of cultural heritage materials and their accessibility to a wider audience.

The seminar continued with discussions among participants.
