Sustainable Development Goals at Baku State University.

A masterclass on “The Impact of Global Climate Change on Water Resources” was delivered at Baku State University by Mammad Asadov, Chief Engineer of the Design Institute of Water and Amelioration Complexes under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.

The event, held at the Faculty of Geography, was dedicated to both Science Day in Azerbaijan and World Water Day. Opening the session, Dean Professor Magsad Gocamanov emphasized the scientific importance of studying the effects of global climate change on water resources and highlighted the speaker’s research contributions in this field.

In his lecture, Mammad Asadov presented an overview of the global state of water resources, noting that approximately 55% of the world’s population suffers from severe water scarcity. He stressed the need for consistent national strategies to address this issue. Referring to Azerbaijan’s context, he pointed out that the country ranks relatively low globally in total and per capita water resources, and that an increase of more than 1.1°C in average annual temperature over the past 20–25 years reflects the regional impact of global climate change.

The speaker also introduced schematic maps illustrating water consumption across irrigated lands and discussed water resource management in the liberated territories, highlighting the application of modern technological solutions.

During the discussion, Professor Farda Imanov and Associate Professor Irada Aliyeva underlined the relevance of the topic and shared proposals on improving the efficient use of water resources in Azerbaijan.
