An event dedicated to World Wildlife Day, observed annually on 3 March, was organized by BSU Volunteers of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science at Baku State University.
Opening the event, Akif Aghabali, Dean of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science, noted that the primary purpose of World Wildlife Day is to increase global attention to the conservation of biodiversity. He emphasized that such events play an important role in raising students’ awareness of wildlife conservation. He also pointed out that due to increasing anthropogenic pressures, many species are experiencing population declines and face the risk of extinction. Therefore, the protection of every component of biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecosystem sustainability.
The event continued with a presentation by Ramil Hasanov, a second-year doctoral student of the Department of Bioecology, on “The Role of Specially Protected Natural Areas in the Conservation of Biodiversity in Azerbaijan.” He provided an overview of the history, categories, and current status of specially protected natural areas in Azerbaijan, noting the growing interest in this field. He also discussed the country’s biodiversity, the conservation of rare species, and the environmental threats posed by invasive species.
At the conclusion of the event, first-year Ecology student Rahima Mehtiyeva spoke about the history and objectives of World Wildlife Day. She also addressed the current global state of biodiversity, factors contributing to species decline, human impacts on wildlife, and measures that can be taken to strengthen conservation efforts.
