Meeting on sustainable development goals and urbanization held at BSU
12-03-2026

A meeting titled “Sustainable Development Goals and Urbanization” was held at Baku State University (BSU) as part of the “Urban Planning and Architecture Week” initiative organized by the “BSU Volunteers” organization.

Opening the event, Secretary General of the organization, Gasim Khalilov, highlighted the importance of the initiative in promoting modern urban development, architectural culture, and sustainable urbanization principles among young people. He noted that the week-long program aims to enhance students’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding through seminars, presentations, expert meetings, and interactive discussions.

The keynote speaker, Asiman Ilyasov, Advisor to the Rector on Quality Assurance, provided a detailed overview of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized that the SDGs aim to improve global well-being, ensure social equality, and protect the environment, covering key areas such as poverty reduction, inclusive and quality education, gender equality, climate action, efficient use of natural resources, and the development of sustainable cities.

He underlined that achieving these goals requires not only government efforts but also active participation from higher education institutions, civil society, and youth. Universities play a crucial role as awareness platforms, fostering student engagement in sustainability initiatives and encouraging innovative ideas.

It was also noted that BSU places special emphasis on promoting sustainable development principles by organizing seminars and projects focused on environmental and social responsibility, and by actively involving students in related initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, where participants engaged in discussions on urbanization and sustainable development.
