On September 24, 2024, at 10:15 AM, a scientific seminar was held in Auditorium 506 at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Baku State University (BSU). At the event, Professor Olcay Coshkun (Baku State University, Digital Research Scientific Laboratory) presented a lecture titled “Representation Theory via Category Theory.”
During his presentation, Professor Coshkun began with general information about group theory and category theory. He explained that the representation theory of finite groups originated in the late 1800s through the work of Frobenius and Schur, further developed by mathematicians such as Brauer, Burnside, and Green, and has become a major branch of algebra due to its wide range of applications.
He also described how, starting in the mid-20th century, category theory emerged as a new framework for understanding the abstract foundations of mathematics, and how methods from category theory have led to the development of more advanced aspects of representation theory. The seminar, delivered in Turkish, was aimed at a broad academic audience.
