11-03-2026

A scientific seminar titled “The problem of studying the psychological needs and psychosocial rehabilitation of patients with severe mental disorders in Azerbaijan” was held at the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology at Baku State University (BSU).

Doctoral student Sayyara Yusubova delivered a presentation on the topic, highlighting the psychological and social needs of patients with severe mental disorders, the challenges they face in adapting to society, and the crucial role of psychosocial rehabilitation in this process. She emphasized that severe mental disorders should be studied not only from a medical perspective but also through comprehensive social and psychological approaches. Identifying the psychological needs of these patients is essential for ensuring emotional stability, facilitating social adaptation, and improving overall quality of life.

Discussing modern scientific approaches to psychosocial rehabilitation, international practices, and their applicability in Azerbaijan, the speaker noted that psychosocial rehabilitation extends beyond clinical treatment. It includes developing patients’ social skills, engaging them in employment, and restoring their relationships with family and society. In this regard, she underlined the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other specialists.

The seminar also analyzed the current state of research in Azerbaijan on the psychological needs of individuals with severe mental disorders. Participants stressed the need to strengthen the institutional development of psychosocial rehabilitation services and enhance the scientific and methodological framework in this field. Additionally, the importance of building social support mechanisms for patient reintegration, reducing stigma and discrimination, and expanding preventive and rehabilitation-oriented mental health programs was highlighted.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session.
