On May 4, 2026, the Faculty of Information and Document Management at Baku State University (BSU) hosted a scientific seminar entitled “School Libraries and Information Literacy”, organized by the Student Scientific Society (SSS). The seminar featured a presentation by Aynur Alasgarova, a master's student of the Department of Library and Information Resources Management.
In her presentation, the speaker provided an overview of the history, development stages, and educational role of school libraries. She noted that, according to the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Libraries, libraries are recognized as social institutions performing educational, scientific, cultural, informational, and developmental functions.
The seminar also addressed the concept of information literacy and emphasized its importance in helping students develop the ability to search for, evaluate, and effectively use information. It was highlighted that school libraries play a significant role in fostering information literacy and learning skills among students. These competencies contribute to the development of critical thinking, encourage independent learning, and support academic achievement.
The research presented during the seminar examined several key issues, including the organization of school libraries in line with the requirements of the modern information society, the enrichment of library collections with digital resources, the continuous development of students’ information-search skills, and the management of information resources in school libraries.
The seminar concluded with discussions and an exchange of views among participants.
