A scientific seminar by a professor from the National Institute of Materials Physics of Romania was held at the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University within the framework of the IX International “Modern Trends in Physics” conference on 27 November 2025.
The seminar was delivered by Professor Stefano Bellucci, who presented on “A new approach to SPR biosensors using two‑dimensional materials: from optical modeling to high‑performance diagnostics.” During his presentation, he provided detailed insights into surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors, their fabrication, applications, and future prospects. SPR biosensors operate by detecting changes in the refractive index at a metal surface to measure interactions between biological molecules in real time without the need for labels, making them highly sensitive and useful for medical diagnostics, biomarker detection, and food safety analysis.
Professor Bellucci highlighted how interactions between surface plasmons and target molecules influence sensor performance and how design parameters such as metal layer thickness and the type and number of two‑dimensional material layers affect sensitivity and selectivity. The seminar concluded with an engaging discussion and a question‑and‑answer session, allowing participants to interact with the speaker and deepen their understanding of the topic.
