17-03-2026

A scientific seminar dedicated to the 120th anniversary of People’s Poet Samad Vurgun was held at the Faculty of Information and Document Management of Baku State University (BSU).

At the seminar, Associate Professor Knyaz Aslan, Head of the Department of Editorial and Publishing Studies at BSU, delivered a presentation entitled “Books and Reading in the Legacy of People’s Poet Samad Vurgun.” He noted that commemorating the anniversaries of Azerbaijan’s prominent figures and promoting their intellectual and cultural heritage had always been among the priorities of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. According to the speaker, Heydar Aliyev highly valued Samad Vurgun’s literary work and played a key role in ensuring that the poet’s 70th anniversary was celebrated at the Union level during the Soviet period. Following Azerbaijan’s independence, he continued to promote the poet’s literary legacy extensively.

The speaker emphasized that this mission is being successfully continued today by President Ilham Aliyev. Highlighting the significance of the Presidential Order of 23 February 2026 on the celebration of the 120th anniversary of People’s Poet Samad Vurgun, he stated that the high regard shown to the poet’s творчество places important responsibilities on educational and research institutions to study his legacy from various perspectives.

The presentation provided a comprehensive analysis of the themes of books and reading in Samad Vurgun’s works. It was noted that the poet consistently emphasized the value of books and reading in both his literary works and scholarly-publicistic writings. The speaker cited poetic examples and scholarly observations illustrating these themes and stressed the important role of Samad Vurgun’s legacy in promoting reading culture and shaping readers’ literary tastes in Azerbaijan.

Vurgun Vakilov, Director of the Samad Vurgun House-Museum and grandson of the distinguished poet, addressed the audience and expressed his gratitude to the BSU administration, the presenter, and all participants for organizing the event.

The seminar continued with discussions, and participants’ questions were answered at the conclusion of the event.
