Scientific seminar held
25-11-2025

On November 25, 2025, a scientific seminar was held at the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science of Baku State University. The seminar featured a presentation by doctoral student Gunel Heydarzade of the Department of Geographical Ecology on the topic: “Ecological assessment of humidity using the MNDWI index based on space technologies in the territories of Lachin, Gubadli, and Zangilan districts.”

Using archival materials, GIS technologies, and satellite imagery, the researcher studied the relief, climate, hydrography, vegetation cover, and soil resources of the study area. The findings were systematized and mapped. The research mainly focused on assessing changes in the hydrological conditions of the Lachin, Gubadli, and Zangilan districts and their impact on forest and vegetation cover. The study was conducted based on satellite images covering the years 2000 and 2021.

As a result, the dynamics of changes in vegetation cover (within the -1 to 1 µm wavelength range) were identified over the years. The analysis revealed significant variations in humid and arid land areas across different land cover categories, including water bodies, mountainous areas, sand and snow cover, non-forested territories, shrubs and grasslands, sparse forests, and dense forest areas.

The findings demonstrated notable shifts in moisture distribution, particularly in shrublands and grasslands, non-forested areas, and sparse forest zones, reflecting hydrological and ecological transformations in the post-conflict period. The research contributes to a better understanding of environmental changes in the liberated territories and provides a scientific basis for future ecological monitoring and sustainable land management strategies.
