A scientific seminar entitled “Forensic Genetics and STR Analysis” was held at Baku State University and organized by the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology.
During the event, second-year Biology student Ofelya Abdullayeva delivered a presentation on forensic genetics, the biological significance of STR analysis, its areas of application, and the stages involved in the analytical process. The presentation also examined the landmark case of Colin Pitchfork, which played an important role in the development of forensic genetics. In addition, the impact of errors in DNA analysis on individuals’ lives and judicial decisions was discussed.
The seminar covered techniques for collecting biological samples, different types of biological evidence, and the use of laboratory equipment, including autoclaves. Participants discussed the importance of proper laboratory procedures in preventing cross-contamination during DNA analysis and emphasized the necessity of accurately following sterilization protocols when using autoclaves.
Speaking at the event, Rasim Abbaszade, Chair of the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology, highlighted the critical importance of scientific accuracy and responsibility in sensitive fields such as forensic genetics.
The seminar concluded with interactive discussions and a question-and-answer session involving participants.
