At the Faculty of Geography of Baku State University (BSU), a scientific seminar was held on the topic: “Investigation of Ecological Problems Caused by the Mining Industry in the Dashkasan District Using GIS Technology.”
Opening the seminar, Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Professor Maqsad Qocamanov, emphasized the importance of sustainable use of natural resources, ecological safety, and sustainable development, highlighting the significance of conducting research in this field. He also noted that Ilhamə Qaribova, a faculty member of the Department of Geodesy and Cartography, has authored various research works applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has conducted studies specifically on ecological problems caused by the mining industry.
Presenter Ilhamə Qaribova provided detailed information on the development stages of the mining industry in the Dashkasan administrative district, including key exploited and operational deposits and mining areas, and their environmental impacts such as soil degradation, forest transformation, and pollution of surface and groundwater. The research utilized aerospace imagery, topographic maps, and field observations to create a spatial database in the GIS environment, map anthropogenic impact zones, and zone areas based on ecological risk levels. Recommendations were also presented on the socio-economic consequences of mining-induced ecological problems, their impact on residential areas and infrastructure, and the application of GIS technologies for rehabilitation and reclamation measures.
During the seminar, professors Chingiz Ismayilov and Aydin Ibrahimov, Doctor of Geography Mehman Mehbaliev, and associate professors Ramiz Əhlimanov, Əfqan Talibov, İradə Əliyeva, Ələkbər Həsənəliyev, Ülviyyə İsmayılova, among others, highlighted the relevance of the topic, praised the innovative methodological approach, and recommended further scientific research in this area.
