Baku State University (BSU) provides access to knowledge, skills, and technology related to food security and sustainable agriculture and aquaculture to local farmers and food producers. In 2024, BSU organized a scientific seminar on “New Directions of Modern Agriculture: Hydroponics and Aquaponics Systems”, where experts and researchers from the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science presented innovative and resource-efficient methods of food production that minimize water and soil use. The seminar was led by Nurlan Amrakhov, a scientific researcher at the Bioengineering Scientific-Research Laboratory of the Center of Excellence for Research, Development and Innovations and a lecturer at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies. He provided detailed insights into the challenges of soil salinization and agricultural field degradation in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that modern solutions such as hydroponic and aquaponic systems, organic fertilizers, melioration, and drip irrigation can significantly increase productivity while conserving water. Participants, including local farmers, agricultural specialists, and students, received practical guidance on implementing small-scale hydroponic and aquaponic systems suitable for local conditions, contributing to both higher yields and environmental sustainability.
BSU also regularly organizes events that bring together local farmers, food producers, scientists, and policy experts to facilitate knowledge exchange and technology transfer. In addition to this seminar, the university hosts scientific-practical conferences and workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Azerbaijan State Agricultural University, focusing on key topics such as soil sustainability, water resource management, and food security. These events create a vital platform for local producers to learn about the latest scientific developments, share practical experiences, and form partnerships with academic experts.
Furthermore, BSU actively collaborates with the local community through joint initiatives to preserve and manage shared aquatic ecosystems, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The university supports and organizes awareness-raising events, research activities, and environmental projects aimed at promoting the sustainable use of oceans, rivers, and lakes. Through these multifaceted efforts, BSU not only enhances knowledge transfer in sustainable agriculture and aquaculture but also strengthens community engagement in environmental conservation and food security initiatives across Azerbaijan.
