27-02-2026

A special scientific seminar entitled “Smart Cities: The Path to a Modern and Environmentally Sustainable Society” was organized by the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science at Baku State University. The event was dedicated to the hosting of the Thirteenth Session of the World Urban Forum 13 in Baku in 2026.

During the seminar, fourth-year student Cahandar Ibadov delivered a presentation examining the environmental challenges associated with rapid urbanization, including resource scarcity, traffic congestion, and air pollution in urban areas.

The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the key components of the smart city concept, including digital infrastructure, energy efficiency, green architecture, intelligent transportation systems, innovative waste management solutions, and environmental monitoring mechanisms. It was emphasized that the smart city model incorporates not only technological innovation but also the principles of environmental responsibility and social equity.

The seminar also explored international experiences and highlighted successful smart city initiatives implemented in various countries. Their environmental outcomes were presented and compared to demonstrate the potential benefits of sustainable urban development.

The discussion session, which featured active participation from students, provided an opportunity for exchanging views on the topic, addressing questions, and identifying potential directions for future research.
