15-04-2026

A masterclass was organized at the Faculty of Journalism of Baku State University (BSU) in connection with the declaration of 2026 as the “Year of urban planning and architecture” in Azerbaijan.

Fariz Khalilli, a leading researcher at the Department of Islamic Period Archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS and a cultural heritage specialist, delivered a lecture on the topic “Principles of preserving architectural monuments in the development of new cities.”

The presentation highlighted the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage within modern urban planning policies, the integration of architectural monuments into urbanization processes, and the preservation of national architectural traditions in the planning of new residential areas.

Fariz Khalilli noted that the construction of new cities should not be limited to the development of modern infrastructure but should also ensure the preservation and continuation of architectural heritage that reflects historical and cultural memory. He particularly emphasized the strategic importance of reconstruction and restoration efforts in the liberated territories from an urban planning perspective.

The event continued in an interactive discussion format, where students raised questions related to urban planning, the protection of historical monuments, and the coverage of urban development issues in the media, engaging in an exchange of ideas on the topic.
