BSU hosts scientific seminar on “longevity: biological and technological determinants”
16-04-2026

A scientific seminar dedicated to International Biologists’ Day (April 16) on the topic “longevity: biological and technological determinants” was held at Baku State University (BSU), organized by the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology.

At the opening of the event, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Professor Afat Mammadova, emphasized the strategic importance of the topic in biomedical sciences. She noted that such scientific events make a significant contribution to the formation of research-oriented thinking among students. The dean highlighted that the study of biological mechanisms of aging is a priority direction both for fundamental biology and for regenerative medicine and biotechnology.

During the seminar, it was noted that aging is not a simple degenerative wear process, but a dynamic system-level kinetic phenomenon. It is a complex biological process regulated by genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Modern technological approaches in this field, particularly the potential of 3D bioprinting for the creation of artificial tissues and organs, were also highlighted.

The seminar further explained the role of nuclear DNA structural integrity, telomere shortening, DNA methylation, and histone modifications in gene expression regulation. The impact of proteostasis disruption and depletion of the stem cell pool on regenerative potential was also emphasized.

At the end, an interactive discussion was held, during which the speaker answered participants’ questions. The seminar concluded with a multidisciplinary discussion of the theoretical and applied aspects of longevity research.
