BSU hosts seminar on digitization of urban planning documents in the “Smart city” context
15-04-2026

A scientific seminar was held at the Faculty of Information and Document Management of Baku State University (BSU) within the framework of the “Year of urban planning and architecture” declared in Azerbaijan.

During the seminar, Aliyusif Mammadov, a lecturer at the Department of Document Management, delivered a presentation on the topic “Digitization of architectural and urban planning documents in the “Smart city” concept.”

The speaker emphasized the significance of the declaration of 2026 as the “Year of urban planning and architecture” by the Presidential Order dated December 22, 2025, noting the growing importance of applied scientific research in this field.

The presentation explained the essence of the modern concept of cities, highlighting that today’s urban environments are increasingly shaped by digital information flows. Key components of the “Smart city” concept, the role of digital technologies in urban planning and architecture, and both theoretical and practical aspects of document digitization were comprehensively analyzed. It was noted that efficient management of information flows and the systematic integration of documents into digital environments are essential for modern urban governance.

The report also addressed the digitization of urban planning documents such as schemes and projects, their integration into unified information systems, and their practical application. A comparative analysis of traditional document-based and digital resources demonstrated that this approach contributes to more effective urban planning, optimal resource management, and improved decision-making processes.

Within the seminar, additional topics such as the application of metadata standards, information security, open data platforms, and the role of library and information institutions in the digitization process within the “Smart city” environment were also discussed.
