Event on the limits and risks of using artificial intelligence in dissertations held at BSU

An event titled “Artificial intelligence in dissertations: regulatory boundaries, risks, and ensuring academic integrity” was held at Baku State University (BSU).

Farid Nagiyev, Director of the Center for Organization of Scientific Activity and Innovations at BSU, noted that while the rapid development of digital technologies is a scientific achievement, it can also create risks of misconduct in academic work. He emphasized that the role of artificial intelligence in writing scientific works such as dissertations and monographs is becoming an increasingly discussed issue. Alongside plagiarism, preventing the misuse of AI tools in dissertation writing is essential. Issues such as authorship, plagiarism risks, and the originality of research require well-defined implementation mechanisms.

During the event, Farida Rzazade, Business Development Manager in Azerbaijan for StrikePlagiarizm.com, delivered a presentation on the modern challenges posed by AI use in dissertations, risks to academic integrity, and the limitations of current detection systems. She noted that the automatic detection of AI-generated content is probabilistic in nature and cannot be considered direct evidence. International practices and statistical data highlight the need to revise existing control mechanisms.

The presentation also outlined comprehensive measures to ensure academic integrity. These include clearly defining permitted and prohibited uses of AI, mandatory disclosure of its use, implementation of multi-level control mechanisms (analysis of drafts, oral defenses, stylometric methods, and automated verification tools), as well as establishing transparent procedures for handling disputed cases and sanction systems. It was also emphasized that teaching formats should be adapted to new technological realities.

It was noted that the goal is not to prohibit artificial intelligence but to integrate it responsibly into the educational process while preserving academic integrity and the quality of education.

At the end of the event, Chair of BSU’s Anti-Plagiarism Commission Kamala Alishayeva and Farida Rzazade answered participants’ questions.
