22-04-2026

An awareness event was held at Baku State University on the occasion of April 22 – International Earth Day, initiated by members of the Geology, Ecology and Soil Science, and Geography faculties of the “BSU Volunteers” organization.

The Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Professor Maqsad Gocamanov, spoke about the historical stages of the Earth’s formation. He provided detailed information about the origin of our planet, its early geological stages, and the changes that occurred over time, emphasizing the importance of this knowledge for modern scientific research and understanding natural processes. He noted that increasing fundamental knowledge about the Earth is essential for properly evaluating environmental problems.

Professor Nazim Imamverdiyev, Head of the Department of General and Historical Geology, explained the internal structure of the Earth and its main layers—the core, mantle, and crust. He also discussed tectonic processes, earthquakes, volcanism, and their impact on human life, highlighting the role of studying geological processes in reducing risks and managing natural disasters.

Lecturer Shahnaz Amanova addressed SDG 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—“Sustainable Cities and Communities.” She emphasized the importance of environmental protection under urbanization, efficient management of land resources, and sustainable urban planning.

During the event, discussions were held on current issues such as climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and the efficient use of natural resources. Participants also shared various suggestions.

In the interactive part of the program, an intellectual competition was organized. The winners were awarded, and active participants received certificates of appreciation.
