Scientific seminar at BSU: The role of zeolites and applied methods in converting bioethanol into fuel
20-02-2026

A scientific seminar titled “The Role of Zeolites and Applied Methods in Converting Bioethanol into Fuel” was held at the Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry at Baku State University (BSU) within the framework of events dedicated to Science Day in the Republic of Azerbaijan (27 March).

The presentation was delivered by doctoral student Khanimbaji Mammadova, who discussed the significance of zeolites in modern bioethanol-to-fuel conversion processes. She noted that zeolites act as highly effective catalysts due to their strong acidity and selective porous structure, accelerating dehydration, cracking, and aromatization reactions, thereby enabling the conversion of bioethanol into hydrocarbons, including gasoline-range products. The development of fuel technologies based on renewable feedstocks is of particular importance in the context of the global energy transition.

The seminar also covered zeolite-based catalytic dehydration methods, as well as the ethanol-to-hydrocarbons (ETH) process carried out on ZSM-5 type zeolites. It was emphasized that the efficiency of this process depends on factors such as catalyst acidity, pore structure, and metal modification.

It was highlighted that zeolite catalysts play a crucial role not only in transforming bioethanol into alternative fuels but also in producing sustainable raw materials for the petrochemical industry. This approach facilitates the integration of renewable resources into existing fuel systems and holds strategic importance for the transition to a sustainable energy model.

The seminar continued with discussions, during which participants’ questions were addressed.
