As part of a series of seminars organized by the Student Scientific Society (SSS) of the Faculty of Biology, a scientific seminar titled “The Life of a Biotechnologist: A Journey Through Industrial Biotechnology, Biodiversity, Bioeconomy, and Science Communication” was held in celebration of World Biologists Day.
The seminar featured Stefano Bertacchi, PhD in Industrial Biotechnology, Associate Professor and Researcher at University of Milano-Bicocca. In his presentation, he examined the development of biotechnology from laboratory research to industrial applications. Drawing on his own scientific experience, he emphasized that the role of a modern biotechnologist extends beyond research and increasingly involves active engagement with economic and social challenges. The practical application of science in addressing contemporary issues was highlighted throughout the discussion.
The seminar also explored the biorefinery concept and efficient approaches to managing waste biomass, including coffee residues, tree bark, and other organic materials. The speaker explained how genetically modified microorganisms can be used to produce bioplastics, vitamins, and aromatic compounds. Participants learned about the contribution of these technologies to biodiversity conservation and the reintegration of raw materials into industrial production cycles.
In the concluding part of the seminar, Stefano Bertacchi spoke about his work as a Youth Ambassador for Bioeconomy at the European Commission and highlighted the importance of science communication. He stressed that presenting complex scientific topics in a clear and accessible way to the broader public is becoming increasingly important. He also shared insights from his experience as the author of several science communication books.
The seminar concluded with discussions on solving biotechnological challenges beyond the laboratory environment and a question-and-answer session with participants.
At the end of the event, Rasim Abbaszade, Chair of the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology, thanked the guest professor for his contribution and noted that similar scientific events would continue to be organized in the future.
