Scientific seminar on aquaculture opportunities for sturgeons in Azerbaijan held
26-02-2026

On February 23, 2026, the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU) organized a scientific seminar dedicated to Science Day. During the seminar, part-time lecturer of the Department of Zoology and Physiology, Zaur Salmanli, delivered a presentation titled “Aquaculture Opportunities for Sturgeons in Azerbaijan.”

The presentation highlighted that sturgeon farming in Azerbaijan is rooted in long-standing traditions and has become an important strategic economic sector in the modern era. It was emphasized that species belonging to the Acipenseridae family, including Huso huso, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Acipenser stellatus, and Acipenser persicus, which inhabit the Caspian Basin and possess high market value, play a significant role in caviar production.

The seminar examined the biological characteristics of sturgeons, including their long lifespan, late sexual maturity, high reproductive capacity, and specific ecological requirements. Opportunities for cultivating these species in cages, ponds, and fish-farming facilities were discussed. Considering the limited freshwater resources available in the country, particular attention was given to intensive and water-efficient technologies, especially recirculating aquaculture systems.

The speaker noted that sturgeon aquaculture offers substantial export potential, contributes to the diversification of the agricultural sector, creates employment opportunities in the regions, supports the conservation of natural populations, and strengthens the raw material base of the food industry.

Participants exchanged views on the topic and discussed the prospects for developing a sustainable and export-oriented aquaculture sector in Azerbaijan. It was concluded that the application of modern technologies can increase productivity while reducing environmental risks.
