A discussion titled “Natural Disasters: Know, Understand, Prevent” was organized jointly by the Faculty of Geography and the Student Youth Organization (SYO) of Baku State University.
At the opening of the discussion, students spoke about the increasing impact of natural disasters in the modern era and emphasized the importance of awareness-raising activities on this topic. It was noted that climate change-driven processes have increased the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, making it essential for young people to engage more deeply with the subject.
During the main part of the event, participants exchanged views on the causes, distribution areas, and mechanisms of natural phenomena such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and others. Both theoretical knowledge and real-case examples were analyzed, with comparative discussions of disasters that occurred in different countries.
A question-and-answer session and group discussions were also organized. Participants were introduced to practical recommendations on behavior during emergencies, risk reduction methods, and basic safety measures.
It was concluded that such awareness events are of great importance for improving students’ ecological and geographical literacy, and that similar projects covering a wider audience are planned for the future.
