A scientific seminar dedicated to "Science Day" in the Republic of Azerbaijan was held at the Faculty of Geography of Baku State University (BSU) on March 27. The seminar featured Dr. Vagif Mammadov, Head of the Hydrogeology and Geoecology Department at the Geological and Geophysical Institute of the Ministry of Science and Education, who delivered a presentation on "The Glaciation Phases of Our Planet."
Məqsəd Qocamanov, Dean of the Faculty of Geography, emphasized the significant role of the decree issued by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on April 9, 2018, establishing "Science Day," which has become an important milestone in the development of science and serves as a source of encouragement for scientists and young researchers. He noted that the interest in scientific research has been growing among young people in recent years, as evidenced by the increasing number of admissions to master's and doctoral programs.
In his presentation, Dr. Vagif Mammadov highlighted that every year, approximately 72 million km² of land on Earth is covered with snow. The density of snow ranges from 0.05-0.45 g/cm³, while compacted snow has a density of 0.40-0.83 g/cm³. When glaciers form, the density reaches 0.90 g/cm³. The total glaciation area on Earth is around 16.3 million km². Glaciers play a significant role in climate formation and circulation, and when they melt, the albedo of the Earth's surface changes, leading to the greenhouse effect.
Following the presentation, questions from associate professors Afgan Talibov, Shakar Mammadpva, teachers Shafiga Humbatova, Laman Hasanaliyeva, Narmin Gojayeva, and others were addressed.
